Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
for the Detroit, Michigan Area
It's difficult to have protruding ears. Even if they are only slightly large, misshapen or asymmetrical, children and adults alike often endure years of hurtful name calling. The good news is that otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a relatively easy procedure that can be performed at any time after the ears have reached full size, usually at five years of age.
Otoplasty, commonly referred to as "ear pinning," reduces the size of large ears or pins back ears that protrude too far from the head. Many patients in Michigan choose otoplasty to greatly enhance their appearance and self-esteem.

Otoplasty from Dr. Vasileff
If you're in the Detroit area and are considering otoplasty for your child, Dr. Vasileff advises that it's typically better to do it sooner than later. Physically, it's better because the cartilage is pliable and easy to shape. Emotionally, it's better because it protects your child from prolonged name calling that can affect self esteem. Adults achieve wonderful results from otoplasty, too, and often decide to have the surgery because they want the confidence to wear their hair short or throw away the baseball caps once and for all. Understanding Otoplasty
Typically, otoplasty takes two hours to perform. An incision is made just behind the ear, above the natural fold where the ear joins the head, to reshape the cartilage and skin to achieve your desired results. In rare cases, Dr. Vasileff will actually have to remove a small amount of cartilage. Then, he'll anchor the ear with stitches to hold it in place while it heals. Because the incision is made behind the ear, scarring is practically invisible.
Preparing for Otoplasty
Dr. Vasileff provides you with a pre-operative information packet that explains everything you should do and know before your surgery. It includes a list of medications you should avoid as well as a "shopping list" of items you should have in stock so you're not running errands when you should be allowing your body to heal. As with any surgery, you should also arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from surgery and stay with you for the first evening.
Recovering from Surgery
Following surgery, Dr. Vasileff will apply soft dressings to your ears to absorb the drainage, and you may experience some swelling and bruising. The dressings will be removed 4-7 days after surgery, but it will be necessary to wear a wide head band over your ears at night for up to 4 weeks to prevent them from pulling forward when you turn over during sleep. You may experience some moderate discomfort, which is easily managed with pain medication.
Enjoying Your Results
When performed by a skilled plastic surgeon, otoplasty can have a tremendous impact on the patient's quality of life. Not only do they enjoy the physical benefits that come from ears that are better suited to their face and head but also they enjoy the emotional benefits associated with increased confidence. For further facial enhancement, Dr. Vasileff may recommend rhinoplasty in Michigan.
