Male Breast Reduction
for the Detroit, Michigan Area

Pick up any men's health magazine, and you'll see an intense, shirtless man revealing his cut and toned pecs. In our culture, a strong chest is a sign of masculinity. Unfortunately, the majority of men have extra tissue in their chests and no amount of exercise helps them develop defined chest muscles. This condition is called gynecomastia, but it's commonly referred to as "male breasts" or "man boobs."

Gynecomastia is most common among boys and men who have been overweight, use steroids or smoke marijuana, but there isn't always an identifiable cause. Regardless, men tell you the condition is a source of humiliation, which makes them reluctant to go to the beach and prevents them from feeling attractive in their clothing. The good news is gynecomastia is very treatable, and men in the Detroit area and throughout Michigan, are achieving the look they want with male breast reduction surgery.

Understanding Male Breast Reduction

If your gynecomastia is a result of heredity, and there is not a great deal of skin excess, Dr. Vasileff typically corrects the condition with liposuction to remove fatty tissue. Small incisions are made at the perimeter of the areola or in the natural contours of the chest. Then a thin, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted to loosen and suction excess fat deposits. In extreme cases, such as massive weight loss, Dr. Vasileff removes excess skin as well and places the incisions to conceal any scarring.

Preparing for Male Breast Reduction

Dr. Vasileff carefully explains your procedure and gives you a set of specific instructions to follow leading up to and on the day of surgery. You can call him at any time with questions or concerns. And, though it is natural to feel some anxiety over having surgery, you can rest easy knowing that you've selected a plastic surgeon whose extensive training and exceptional skill have made him the doctor of choice in metro Detroit.

Recovering from Surgery

For men choosing breast reduction, Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Vasileff performs this procedure on an outpatient basis at TruVista Surgery Center in Troy or William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Following surgery, dressings will be applied to your incisions and a snug-fitting support garment, like a vest, will be used to minimize swelling and bruising. After a day or two, you can remove the dressings but should plan to wear the vest day and night for at least a week. You can ease back into your routine within a few days.

Enjoying Your Results

Healing continues for several weeks as the bruising and swelling disappear. Soon, you'll start to see your new chest contour taking shape and the incision lines fade. Most men never tell anyone that they've had the surgery, but they feel the boost in self-confidence that comes with a more masculine chest. They also enjoy the attention from friends and loved ones who can't quite put their finger on why they look so good!
