Understanding Breast Reduction
In Michigan, breast reduction surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis although some women prefer to stay overnight in the hospital. During the procedure, which generally takes several hours, Dr. Vasileff makes an incision around the nipple then down on the breast, similar to a keyhole pattern. Then, he removes the excess skin, tissue and fat and relocates the nipple to a natural position. Breast reduction can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin around the nipple.
Preparing for Breast Reduction
Dr. Vasileff's nurses provide you with a pre-operative information packet that explains everything you should do and know before surgery. It includes a list of medications you should avoid as well as a "shopping list" of items to have in stock. If you choose to have your surgery on an outpatient basis, you'll need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the hospital or surgical center and stay with you for at least the first night.
Recovering from Surgery
After surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze under a soft, surgical bra, which should be left in place for a week to minimize swelling. The only time you should take the bra off is when you shower. You'll experience some bruising around the breasts and some swelling of the breasts and sometimes the abdomen. Discomfort is usually mild and is easily controlled with pain medication. You may sleep in any position that is comfortable except on your stomach. Most importantly, you should take it easy and avoid lifting anything heavy for at least a week. Dr. Vasileff reminds his patients that now's the time to let their husbands lug around the children, groceries and laundry. He'll even write you a prescription stating this to give to your husband.
Enjoying Your Results
Your final bra size will not be determined for 10-12 weeks, but you will be amazed at the immediate, dramatic results from your breast reduction surgery. Women love the way their clothes fit and feel over their new, beautifully proportioned bodies. And, for the first time in a long time, you can jump for joy without pain!
